3:16 pm - Entry the Sixteenth
Being ill is a horrible thing. I had the flu earlier in the week. It's particularly frustrating as a healer, I think, because viral infections like the flu and colds just cannot be healed or fixed - at least in terms of our ability. It does make sense though, since viruses are not cellular in nature.

I'm glad I didn't infect Riston or Walter, and I avoided everyone else for the two days I was ill. I dislike missing classes for reason of being sick! It's not enjoyable time off when you've got fevers and aches and pains!

But it cleared up around Thursday and it was back to classes. I've caught up on all the work missed. Now the weekend! Which shall be two much more enjoyable days off.

[Private to self]:
Today is Mother's Day at home, and it never fails to make me sad. Even here, where it would be so very easy to forget, as Americans don't celebrate Mother's Day until May.

Mother's Day will always be one of those terribly sad days. That and, I'm always sad to think (but never say), Elisabeth's birthday. I always feel particularly sad that Elisabeth never had a chance to meet her at all. Not that that makes it any less sad for her. In some ways I suspect it was more difficult for her, as a young lady needs a mother. And her governness wasn't nearly as lovely as mine was.

I think I'll telephone her shortly.

It appears I'm finally getting a new roommate. New to me, anyway.

Riston, I've tidied up the other side of the room, so whenever you want to bring your things down... well, it's your room now.

I'm pleased to hear you don't have animals. Logan was a nice bloke but his cat used to attack my feet at night.

I've been looking through the course selection catelogue for Dartmouth these past few days. I want to get it in as soon as possible, just to have that out of the way.

There are so many interesting courses offered. Unfortunately, for first year, my lot is mostly already chosen. Intro to Biology, Intro to Chemistry, English, Statistics & Analysis and one course of my choosing. I'll likely take Intro to Psychology. Or possibly Physics. Either would be useful.

I've decided to send my sister some peanut butter.

Peanut butter is not something that people eat in England, you see. I'd never had peanut butter until I came here to go to school.

So I shall send some to Elisabeth and see what she thinks. I rather suspect that she'll be quite fond of it.

My sister sent me a care package in the post. Which is a bit amusing considering that I just saw her over the hols. I suppose she heard me mention things I missed from home.

She sent me a lot of tea. Proper English tea. Lemon sherberts as well. Some choclate that you can't find here. Tayto crisps. Its as if she thinks I need to eat less healthily. No, she's just being kind.

She sent some photos as well, that she took over the hols. And a rubber duck dressed as a Royal Guardsman.

We've returnd from London, Walter and I.

I don't feel the jet lag yet, but I will. It's always so much worse flying to American than it is flying to London, but that's par for the course. Studies have shown that jet lag is worse flying from East to West. I wonder why that is. I suppose it has something to do with Circadian rhythms.

We had a very nice holiday. Went all around London so that alter could see a variety of things and, well, I always enjoy exploring the city. It was good to see my sister again. She was packing up as well this morning, as she has to return to her school as well although she doesn't have quite so long a trip.

The flight was uneventful. I quite like the new airplanes which have television monitors for ever seat, so that you aren't stuck watching a rubbish movie with everyone else.

I will be going home to London for the hols, and I am particularly looking forward to it because Walter will be coming with me.

We will be leaving on the 22nd and returning on the 4th, so it will be a nice trip. My sister is absolutely thrilled.

This week has always been a good one. The collective mood seems to lift hen December arrives. Well, for those people who celebrate Christmas, at any rate.

To add to the university talk, I got my acceptance letter for Dartmouth this week. I'll be studying pre-med. I've applied to some places at home as well, but I'd prefer to go to Dartmouth.

So Britain has brought in identification cards for foreign nationals. This is not a surprise, as it has been in the works for some time now, and yet it is importan news.

I can understand the desire for added security in such an uncertain world, but it smacks of privacy invasion., having to give up so much information, including ten fingerprint scans, retinal and iris scans, among other things, if you want to work or go to school in the country.

The country has had national ID cards at points in past history and it did not end well. There is alread opposition, and I am sure that when it becomes compulsory for Britons themselves to get the card, then there will be an even great out-cry against the cards.

I find all the commotion about Hallowe'en a bit peculiar. Especially as it's not until the end of the month!

At home, Hallowe'en only came into vogue in the latter part of the 20th century, so it is not nearly such a big deal. We do have trick-or-treating and parties and costumes and what not, but things aren't planned so far in advance and are done on a smaller scale. And of course we still have All Soul's Night in some places.

Bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night), now that is something to get excited about. Which you lot don't have here. Shame. It's always a good night. I'll have to live vacariously through my sister when she writes me after Bonfire Night.

I have been missing home a bit lately, as I keep getting post from my sister, detailing the things that she has been doing.

August was always been particularly nice. Our governesses would take us to Edinburgh for a week or two, to attend various events at the Edinburgh International Festival. Which is really brilliant. Concerts, theatre, opera and other things. Its all very wonderful. And Edinburgh is a beautiful city in of itself. Always one of my favourite places to visit. That and Paris. Paris will always be a classic. My sister has been sending me leaflets from various shows and postcards from events. Not quite the same as being there proper, I must admit.

New Hampshire is really quite an interesting place. I've been looking into the various natural attractions, and there are quite a few. Apparently many of them are the result of glaciers that once moved over the area, leaving behind large granite deposits. Quite brilliant, really. I suppose that's why its called the Granite State. Although I cannot seem to figure out why the motto is 'Live Free or Die'. You Americans can be a bit odd, I hope you know that. I mean that in the best possible way.

There is something nice about library books. I like the plastic wrap that is used to cover the hardbacks, the crackling sound it makes when you open them. And I like the rows upon rows of books, some old and some new.

I enjoy bookstores for much the same reason - save for the plastic coverings, of course. Being surrounded by books is very comforting.

What is everyone's favourite book?

Its always nice to go to the post and find proper mail. I recieved a letter from my sister today. She always writes extraordinarily long letters, which are always enjoyable to read. There's something to be said for hand-written letters. E-mail and what not, while convenient, do not quite match up to something written by hand, don't you think?

Oh, while I'm writing this - I seem to have misplaced the book I was reading (or rather, re-reading). It's called Lamb, by Christopher Moore. It's a bright yellow book - hard to miss. If anyone has located it, please let me know. It's one of my favourites and I'd hate to lost it permanently.
